Back in the 21st century

My parents have purchased broadband ;-). Since I’m living with them at the moment, this is good news. Honestly, I couldn’t quite remember how painfully slow and expensive analogue dialup Internet access was; now I can remember only too well. I find it very hard to do without fast, always-on Internet access these days.

It’s been a while since I updated this diary and I’ve considered ditching it, but I won’t just yet. I’m happy to add an entry whenever I feel like it - even if it’s nearly two months since the last one.

Found this document on Computer Security Incident Response Teams from CERT. Incident Response is one possible career direction - if anyone will take me, so it’s perhaps worth my while to read it. Meanwhile, I’m still progressing through Computer Forensics, a book which is actually very readable, at the expense of fine detail. It’s difficult to imagine that it would equip anyone to perform a meaningful forensic investigation. I’m not sure who it’s aimed at; most of the theory is way too simple for a sys admin who needs to know a little about incident response. Surely the goal is not to train complete beginners to become forensic analysts? And I’d prefer to pay £5 less and lose the screenshots, thanks very much.
