I have an interview

Created: 20 Dec 2003

I had a phone call today to invite me for a job interview, so things are looking up. I actually missed the call as I was busy feeding nearly all of a bottle of gear oil into the Volvo’s gearbox. It looks like it will take more oil too.

A reasonably productive day, albeit frustrating day. I spent a considerable amount of time looking for decent 802.11 adaptors for Mum’s, Dad’s and Helen’s laptops. Mum and Helen only have USB ports and Dad and I aren’t convinced that the dongle-type ones are any good, since they lack a decent antenna. There’s a distinct paucity of decent reviews on wireless hardware and I finally decided that I dislike Tom’s Hardware intensely. It’s too time-consuming to trawl through all the useless and irrelevant documents its search turns up.

Dad and I were fiddling with the TV aerial to get digital working. Having installed a high-gain wideband aerial on a tall pole, the damn thing still wouldn’t work. It turns out that one of the RF connectors on the back of the digital reciever wasn’t properly home! Seems to be acceptable now, although the analogue channels pick up noise after going through the pasthroughs on the digital box and the VCR. There are lots of new channels picked up when Dad did a scan for channels. Most of them are junk.

Struggling with a printing problem from Windows XP to CUPS on a Debian stable Linux box. Multiple copies don’t work. I’m fairly sure it’s a Windows driver issue. Another irritation has been the fact that a lot of my posts to the HantsLUG ML haven’t been making it. If it wasn’t for the fact that Virgin are woefully incomptent and could be dropping my email I would say I was falling victim of a spam blacklist.
