Mordor finished, Sauron in tatters

A few positives from today. Firstly, I actually went for a run today, which shook me out of my torpor a little bit. I managed a mile again and although I felt knackered afterwards, it wasn’t an unpleasant feeling. Something needs to be done about my legs, that’s for sure. They don’t feel like legs that have been used to action in this last few months. They’re flabby and weak. Over the next few weeks I’m going to build back up to at least 3 miles at least 3 times per week. One of my goals for next year is to run a sub 40 minute 10K. Ambitious, but realistic too; I managed 45 minutes in a flat 10K last year.

Iain will be down here for the Christmas period, so I’ll see him, so I can add that to the short list of cheerful things for today. Oh, and I went to see Return of the King with Mat, Paula and Ria. On the whole it was a good film although I have a number of reservations. For a start I am pretty possessive about the story and it upsets me when they change it. It has definitely been cut to film length, albeit very long film length. The cuts have been done cleverly, so nothing of massive significance has been changed, but I still feel it could be truer to to the book. There is a syrupy sentimental feel to the film that is not present in my reading of the book. For example the music that accompanies Frodo and Sam is just so reminiscent of Disney films it sets my teeth on edge. Despite all these complaints I still enjoyed it, although I had the impression that I enjoyed it less than the people

Well apart from that, today was a day spent on IRC and whiling away the hours. There’s so much to learn and so little time available. The last postive thing was really minor. I’ve decided to sod the Volvo special gear oil and just put synthetic oil from Halfords in the gearbox. Life’s too short to piss around with proprietary gear oils.
