An excellent Friday lunch in the _ The Real Greek Souvlaki and bar in Clerkenwell kicked off the weekend, although I did spend the afternoon in the office, before making my way to Tate Modern for the Edward Hopper exhibition. Favourite paintings: Nighthawks _ , Captain Upton’s House and Cape Cod Evening . Time to “art saturation point”, where I can no longer look at anything with real interest: not reached. A drink at the Black Friar and then to Winchester.
Saturday was the HantsLUG Bring a Box meeting and AGM. Tony Whitmore was duly elected Chairman and Neil Ferguson became a General Officer. I chatted to a few familiar people and a couple of new faces and generally skived off my greeting people duties, although Andy seemed happy to man the doors while he fiddled with his laptop. A quick drink in a pub with some of the LUG guys started my evening rolling.
Sally and I headed for a quick drink at the Flower Potts in Cheriton, which became a longer drink than planned as I sampled probably all the real ales they had. Following this we had dinner and wine, then more wine with Dave and Fiona …
Sunday was heralded by the arrival of a hangover and a stye in my left eye. Happily it ws also the day that Sally used her ice cream maker for the first time. Very fresh ice cream has a wonderful soft texture and great flavour. The raspberry (made with raspberries from Sally’s dad’s allotment) was exceptional. Then home. An effortless journey made so much easier by the company of a good book; Carter Beats the Devil , by Glen David Gold.
The stye has been treated with ointment and burst. The cursed Contivity VPN client still doesn’t work and the binary-only kernel modules lock out the network so effectively that I can’t use the loopback interface to configure it. The same kernel modules also cause my machine to lock solid. Mondays - I hate them.
